Product Page SEO: How to Rank and Convert Product Pages
Product page SEO for online stores: titles, descriptions, images, reviews, structured data, variants and out-of-stock handling, with examples you can copy.
- Product pages win specific searches that include a brand, model, size, material or use, and they convert, so every improvement pays twice.
- Unique descriptions matter most for best sellers. Supplier copy is duplicated across every store that sells the same item.
- Answer pre-purchase questions on the page: fit, materials, care, delivery and returns.
- Complete Product and Offer structured data makes products eligible for rich results and gives AI assistants the details they match on.

Product page SEO is the work of making each product page rank for the specific searches it can win, and convert the people who land on it. Category pages usually win broad searches such as “running shoes”. Product pages win the precise ones: a model, a size, a material or a use, such as “waterproof trail running shoes wide fit”.
These are the twelve fixes we make most often, roughly in order of impact.
1. Write titles that say what the product is
“Aurora” is a product name. “Aurora Linen Shirt for Men, Relaxed Fit” is a title someone might search. Use the pattern: product name + product type + the detail people search for (fit, material, size or use). Keep the page title under about 60 characters so it is not cut off in results.
2. Replace supplier descriptions on best sellers
If ten stores use the manufacturer’s copy, Google has ten copies of the same page to choose from. Rewrite descriptions for your best sellers and for products with search demand first. The rest can follow.
3. Answer the questions buyers ask
Check your customer service inbox, reviews and “People also ask” results. Then answer, on the page:
- Who is it for, and who is it not for?
- How does it fit, feel or perform?
- What is it made of, and how do you care for it?
- How long does delivery take to my country, and can I return it?
This is also what AI assistants quote when they recommend products.
4. Use specs as structured, scannable content
Put dimensions, materials, compatibility and what is in the box in a clear table or list, not buried in a paragraph. Shoppers skim, and search engines extract.
5. Add complete structured data
Product and Offer markup makes a page eligible for rich results such as price, availability and review stars. Include name, image, brand, GTIN or SKU, price, currency, availability, reviews, shipping details and return policy. Our product schema guide has a full example.
6. Show real reviews
Reviews add unique, fresh content in your customers’ own words, answer objections and lift conversion. Show them on the page (not only inside a pop-up) and include the rating in structured data.
7. Optimise images properly
- Descriptive file names such as
linen-shirt-sand-relaxed-fit.jpg - Alt text that describes the image in plain words
- Compressed, correctly sized files in a modern format
- The main image loads first and is not lazy-loaded
8. Handle variants deliberately
Keep colours and sizes on one URL unless a variant has its own search demand. If you do give variants their own URLs, make each one genuinely different (images, copy) and link to them clearly.
9. Link to and from the right places
Every product should be linked from its category, related products and any buying guide that mentions it. Link back up to the category and across to accessories or alternatives.
10. Handle out-of-stock products without losing rankings
Keep temporarily unavailable products live, mark them as out of stock in structured data and offer alternatives or a back-in-stock alert. For discontinued products, redirect to the closest replacement or category. Full detail in out-of-stock SEO.
11. Make the page fast on phones
Most product page visits are on mobile. Watch the main image, review widgets and third-party scripts, which are the usual causes of slow product pages.
12. Keep the page and feeds consistent
Price, availability and reviews should match across the page, the structured data and your Google Merchant Center feed. Mismatches can cost you rich results and Shopping visibility.
Where should you start?
Pick your 20 best-selling products and apply fixes 1, 2, 3 and 5 to each. That usually moves both rankings and conversion within a few weeks.

Frequently asked questions
What is product page SEO?
Product page SEO is the work of making individual product pages rank in search engines and convert visitors. It covers titles, descriptions, images, reviews, structured data, variants, internal links and how out-of-stock products are handled.
Should every product have a unique description?
Ideally, yes. In practice, start with best sellers and products with search demand. Supplier descriptions are duplicated on every store selling the same item, which gives Google no reason to prefer yours.
Should product variants have their own URLs?
Only when a variant has its own search demand, such as a colour people search for by name. Otherwise keep variants on one URL so signals are not split.
How long should a product description be?
Long enough to answer the questions buyers ask before they buy. For a simple item that might be 100 words; for a considered purchase it might be 400 plus specs and FAQs.
