Key takeawaysTL;DR
  • Shopify handles sitemaps, canonical tags and hosting for you. Most SEO problems come from the theme, apps and content.
  • The three highest-impact checks are internal links to canonical product URLs, collection page copy and complete product structured data.
  • robots.txt can be edited through the robots.txt.liquid template, which lets you keep filter and search URLs out of the crawl.
  • If you sell abroad, Shopify Markets needs localised content, not just translated currency.
On this page7 sections
  1. Setup (checks 1 to 5)
  2. Theme and internal links (checks 6 to 11)
  3. Collections (checks 12 to 17)
  4. Products (checks 18 to 23)
  5. Speed (checks 24 to 27)
  6. International and AI (checks 28 to 30)
  7. What should you fix first?

A Shopify SEO checklist should cover six areas: setup, theme and internal links, collections, products, speed and international. Shopify handles the basics well, including sitemaps, canonical tags and hosting, so the checks below focus on the parts it leaves to you.

Work through it in order. The first sections usually bring the most traffic for the least effort.

Setup (checks 1 to 5)

  1. Search Console is verified for the primary domain, and the sitemap at /sitemap.xml is submitted.
  2. One primary domain. All other domains and the myshopify.com address redirect to it.
  3. GA4 or your analytics tool is connected, with ecommerce revenue tracked, so you can see organic revenue by landing page.
  4. The store is not password protected and no theme setting or app adds noindex to live pages.
  5. Your brand name is consistent in the home page title, logo and Organization structured data.
  1. Product links point to /products/handle, not /collections/name/products/handle. Many themes link through the collection path. The canonical tag points to the right URL, but internal links should too.
  2. Breadcrumbs appear on collections and products, and match your structure.
  3. Pagination uses real links (?page=2) that crawlers can follow, not only infinite scroll.
  4. robots.txt keeps low-value URLs out of the crawl. Shopify lets you edit robots.txt.liquid to add rules for filter, sort and internal search URLs.
  5. Tag and filter URLs are not indexed unless they match real search demand.
  6. Headings are used properly: one H1 per page, with the product or collection name.

Collections (checks 12 to 17)

  1. Every important collection targets a real search, mapped from keyword research.
  2. Collection titles and meta descriptions are written by hand for your top 20 collections.
  3. There is copy on the page: a short intro above the products and useful text below them.
  4. Collections link to related collections and to relevant buying guides.
  5. Empty or near-empty collections are either filled, merged or removed with a redirect.
  6. Automated collections built from tags do not create dozens of thin duplicates.

More detail in our guide to category page SEO.

Products (checks 18 to 23)

  1. Best sellers have unique descriptions, not supplier copy.
  2. Product titles include what the item is, not only the product name.
  3. Images have descriptive file names and alt text, and are compressed.
  4. Reviews are shown on the page and included in structured data.
  5. Product structured data is complete: brand, GTIN or SKU, price, availability, reviews, shipping and returns. Test it in Google’s Rich Results Test.
  6. Out-of-stock products stay live while they are coming back. Discontinued products redirect to the closest alternative. See out-of-stock SEO.

Speed (checks 24 to 27)

  1. Apps are audited. Remove any you do not use, and check what the rest load on every page.
  2. Core Web Vitals pass on mobile for collection and product templates in Search Console.
  3. The first product image loads first: not lazy-loaded, correctly sized and in a modern format.
  4. Fonts and third-party scripts such as chat, reviews and pop-ups load after the main content.

International and AI (checks 28 to 30)

  1. Shopify Markets are set up with subfolders or domains for each country, and hreflang tags validate. Our guide to Shopify Markets and hreflang covers the common mistakes.
  2. Localised pages are actually localised: prices, shipping details and the words people use in that market.
  3. AI crawlers can reach the store and product data is complete, so assistants such as ChatGPT can recommend your products. See how to get products into ChatGPT Shopping.

What should you fix first?

If you only have one afternoon, do checks 6, 14 and 22. Internal links, collection copy and product structured data are the three changes we see move Shopify revenue most often.

If the list turns up more than your team can handle, our Shopify SEO services fix it inside your theme, as part of our wider ecommerce SEO services.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes. Shopify gives every store a sitemap, canonical tags, an editable robots.txt and fast hosting. The common problems are duplicate product paths created by themes, slow apps, thin collection pages and incomplete structured data.

Can I change Shopify URL structure?

You can change the handle, the last part of each URL, but not the /products/ and /collections/ prefixes. Those prefixes do not stop pages from ranking.

Do I need a Shopify SEO app?

Not for the basics. Apps can help with bulk edits or image compression, but many SEO problems sit in the theme code, which apps cannot fix. Every app also adds scripts that can slow the store down.

How often should I run a Shopify SEO check?

Run the full checklist once a quarter and after any theme change, app install or migration. Check Search Console for indexing errors every week.
