Why migrations lose traffic

Most traffic drops after a migration were avoidable.

A new platform should mean a better store, not six months of lost revenue. These are the six mistakes we see behind almost every migration drop.

  1. 01

    Missing or chained redirects

Products, categories, images and old campaign URLs left without a redirect, or sent through two or three hops.

  2. 02

    A forced new URL structure

Platforms like Shopify fix their own URL prefixes, so every old URL needs a new home.

  3. 03

    Content lost on the way

Category copy, FAQs, reviews and metadata that nobody moved because they were not in the product export.

  4. 04

    Templates that render differently

New themes that hide copy behind scripts, drop structured data or change internal links.

  5. 05

    Launching blind

Staging settings such as noindex go live, sitemaps point at old URLs and nobody checked before switching over.

  6. 06

    Nobody watching after launch

404s, index drops and lost rankings found weeks later, when recovery is slower.

What’s included

A migration plan, from benchmark to recovery.

We own the SEO side of the move and work with whoever builds the new store: your developers or ours.

  • 01

    Benchmark

A full crawl, rankings, traffic and revenue by page, so you know exactly what there is to protect.

  • 02

    URL mapping

Every old URL matched to its new one: products, categories, content, images and PDFs.

  • 03

    Redirect plan

One-hop 301s, tested in bulk before launch and again after it.

  • 04

    Content and metadata parity

Titles, descriptions, copy, FAQs and reviews carried over, page by page.

  • 05

    Staging QA

Templates, rendering, structured data and internal links checked before customers see them.

  • 06

    International setup

Markets, hreflang and currencies rebuilt without breaking what already ranks abroad.

  • 07

    Launch-day checks

Robots, sitemaps, Search Console, analytics and redirects checked within hours.

  • 08

    30 days of monitoring

Daily checks on errors, indexation, rankings and revenue, with fixes shipped the same day.

Who does what

Clear owners at every stage.

Migrations go wrong in the gaps between teams. We agree who owns each task before the build starts.

Why Qube

We have moved big sites before.

A migration is the riskiest SEO project a store runs. It is worth doing with people who have done it.

01 · Experience

500+ pages moved, then +150% traffic.

Our largest migration moved Hyland’s 500+ page site to a new structure. It is not a store, but the work is the same: benchmark, map, test and monitor. Organic traffic grew 150% in the 12 months after. Read the case study.

02 · Build and SEO

We can build the new store too.

Our Shopify development team builds with the migration plan from day one, so SEO is part of the design, not a checklist in launch week.

03 · How to choose

Choosing a migration SEO partner.

Ask anyone planning your migration these four questions.

  • When do they get involved? Before design starts, not in launch week.
  • Do they map every URL?Including images, PDFs and old campaign pages.
  • Do they test on staging?Redirects and templates checked before customers see them.
  • Who watches after launch?Daily monitoring for at least 30 days.

Timeline

SEO starts eight weeks before launch.

The earlier we are involved, the fewer surprises. This is a typical plan for a store with a few thousand URLs.

  1. 8 weeks before

    Benchmark

Crawl, rankings, traffic and revenue recorded page by page.

  2. 6 weeks before

    Map

URL mapping, redirect plan and content parity checklist.

  3. 2 weeks before

    Staging QA

Templates, schema, links and redirects tested on staging.

  4. Launch day

    Switch over

Redirects live, sitemaps submitted, checks within hours.

  5. 30 days after

    Monitor

Daily checks and fixes until traffic has recovered.

Will I lose rankings when I change ecommerce platforms?

Some movement is normal for a few weeks. Big, lasting drops usually come from missing redirects, lost content or templates that render differently, and all of these can be prevented with a proper migration plan.

How long does traffic take to recover after a migration?

With a good plan, most stores are back to their previous level within four to eight weeks. Without one, recovery can take months, and some traffic never comes back.

When should SEO be involved in a replatforming project?

Before design starts, ideally six to eight weeks before launch. URL structure, templates and content decisions made early are expensive to change later.

Do you move products, customers and orders?

The developers building the new store move the data, whether that is our team or yours. We own the SEO plan: benchmarks, URL mapping, redirects, parity checks and monitoring.

How much does migration SEO cost?

It depends on the number of URLs, markets and platforms involved. We quote a fixed fee after a 30-minute call.

Can you help after a migration has already gone wrong?

Yes. We compare old and new URLs, rebuild missing redirects, restore lost content and fix template issues. The sooner we start, the faster rankings come back.
